Showa to Produce World's Smallest Hard Disk for Mobile Phones
June 23, 2005
The Japanese company Showa Denko has started mass production of a hard disk which is currently the world's smallest. It has about the size of a US quarter coin and can contain four gigabytes of data. The hard disk will be used for mobile phone hard disk drives. Currently, the disks are produced at Showa's plant in Chiba, Japan for evaluation purposes. In July the company expects production to be between 20,000 and 30,000 units. However, Showa will move production to its Singapore plant in the near future, where there is capacity for 100,000 units per month.
